The goal
To finish a 3D print to look like antique gold, exploring paint techniques and surface finishing to create a realistic, aged metal effect.
3D Print
October 2025
I 3D printed a Space Age style trinket dish using black PLA. The bowl was printed upside down and therefore has a lot of imperfections due to support material being used.
Body Filler
I then dry sanded the print with 220 grit sandpaper and used body filler to fill in the layer lines.

Dry Sand
I sanded off the body filler using 320 grit sandpaper.

Primer
I sprayed primer filler on the model to fill in any gaps and scratches.

Wet Sand
I used 400 grit sandpaper to sand away the filler primer.

Wet Sand
I sprayed the model with more filler primer then wet sanded with 600 grit sandpaper.

I sprayed the model with more filler primer then wet sanded with 800 grit sandpaper.

Black Paint
I sprayed the model with more filler primer then sprayed with black gloss spray paint.

Gold Paint
I used gold rub & buff paint to get an antique gold effect.
